Lady Lions pick up a win in the first game of the SVU Spring Classic

Troutville, VA –  At the Southern Virginia University Spring Classic the Penn State Beaver Lady Lions opened up the day against Southern Virginia University.  Beaver got on the board in the bottom of the first when Lauren Pier (New Brighton/New Brighton) doubled to lead off.  Pier advanced to third on a steal and Ashley Watkins (Seneca Valley/Cranberry Township, PA) was walked.  A double by Myranda Raymond (Brashear/Pittsburgh, PA) scored both Pier and Watkins.  With Raymond on second, Lindsey Scialdone (Ellwood City/Ellwood City, PA) grounded out to advance the runner and it looked like the Lady Lions might score again after Korey Freyermuth (Perry Traditional/Pittsburgh, PA) was walked, but a fly out ended the inning.  Both teams continued to play solid defense as the scored remained 2-0 until the fifth inning when Pier got things started again with a single.  She was followed by Nicole Bowersox (Penns Valley/Penn Valley, PA) who also singled.  With the runners at first and second, Watkins layed down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third.  Raymond also got on base on a fielders choice scoring Pier.  This run gave Beaver a 3-0 lead at the end of the sixth inning.  Solid pitching by Freyermuth closed out the game and keeping SVU scoreless.

Offensively, Pier and Jamie Karpinski (Quigley Catholic/Beaver, PA) lead the team with 2 hits a piece.  Raymond lead the team in RBI's with 3 and Pier, Scialdone and Raymond all had doubles in this afternoons game.

On the mound for the Lady Lions was Freyermuth who threw 7 innings giving up 5 hits and striking out 2.

The Lady Lions are now 2-12 and play again at 6:00pm.
