Lady Lions Fall to Bearcats in Double-Header

Latrobe, PA- The Women's Softball Team of Penn State Beaver (1-8, 0-0 PSUAC) played on the road this afternoon against the Bearcats of St. Vincent College (Latrobe, PA)

In Game 1, Jamie Karpinski (Quigley/Beaver, PA) opened up scoring in the top of the second inning after being walked at bat. Karpinski then advanced to second and third following after two passed balls. While Rachel Borell (Downington East/Downington, PA) was at bat, another passed ball occured, giving Karpinski the lead to run in and score. Beaver took a 1-0 lead. A St. Vincent player scored a homerun soon after, and tied the game at 1-1 to close the second inning. On the bottom of the sixth, St. Vincent scored again on a passed ball and Beaver went on to lose Game 1 2-1. Taking the loss on the mound was junior Korey Freyermuth (Perry/Pittsburgh, PA). Freyermuth pitched six innings, giving up five hits, two runs, and striking out one person. Offensively, Karpinski lead Beaver with two hits, including one run. The Lady Lions finished the game with five hits.

In Game 2, St. Vincent came out scoring two runs on the bottom of the first. Beaver couldn't record a run until the top of the fifth inning when both Sydney Brinton (Brashear/Pittsburgh, PA) and Lindsey Scialdone (Ellwood City/Ellwood City, PA) hit a single to put the Lady Lions on both first and second bases. Sophomore Nicole Bowersox (Penn Valley/Penns Valley, PA) recorded a RBI for the day after a single from her ran in Brinton. The Lady Lions went on the board after the top of the fifth inning down 2-1. St. Vincent scored two runs in the fifth inning, and closed out the game in the bottom of the sixth inning after another run. Beaver went on to lose the second game of the double-header 5-1. Freyermuth took the loss on the mound after pitching six innings, giving up eight hits, five runs, and two strikeouts. Brinton lead the team on offense scoring one run. The Lady Lions finished the game with four hits.

The Lady Lions return to action Monday, March 19, 2012 at 3:30 and 5:30 p.m in another double-header on the road against Chatham University (Pittsburgh, PA).
