Harper, Hazleton Triumph at 2021 PSUAC Golf Championship

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - It's been a while since the PSUAC needed to conduct a playoff in golf to determine a champion. Turns out this was the year. Penn State Hazleton's Jeremey Harper and Penn State Lehigh Valley's Ian Masenheimer matched two-day totals at 4-over 148 at the 2021 PSUAC Golf Championship and needed extra holes to determine an individual medalist.

Starting on hole 14, a par-3 over water, the pair matched each other with testy par putts. The par-4 15th saw both make routine pars as well, leading them to the par-4 16th. A tough driving hole with out of bounds left and a necessary bunker carry, both players found the fairway and had wedges in their hands. Harper played first and stuck his second shot three feet away for birdie. Masenheimer had about 18-feet for birdie but missed and tapped in for par. Harper found the bottom of the cup for his second straight individual title.

The finish mirrored the 2020-21 spring championship event (fall championship moved to spring due to COVID-19), as Harper placed first and Masenheimer second just five short months ago on a course each has become quite familiar with.

On the team side, Hazleton captured their first championship in 10 years with a 57-shot advantage over their nearest competitor, runner-up Penn State York. Hazleton finished with a 312 on day one and followed with 317 on the final day for a total of 629. The finish also put Hazleton in the top six teams of the concurrently held USCAA Small College Golf National Championship.
