Austin Green Wins PSUAC Medalist Honors In Playoff; DuBois Edges Out W-B for Team Trophy
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State Mont Alto's Austin Green captured his second PSUAC Individual Medalist honors on Tuesday, winning on the first hole of a sudden victory playoff with Wilkes-Barre's Jonathan Wilson.
Green and Wilson each finished the two-day tournament at 2-over par 146 on the par-72 Penn State Blue Course. Green was tied for second in the concurrent USCAA National Championship tournament after day one, but a 76 on day two took him out of contention on the national scene. Wilson had very consistent days with back-to-back 73's, leading to the playoff where Green would birdie the par-5 18th. Green also won PSUAC Medalist honors in 2015.
In the team portion of the event, Penn State DuBois won by a stroke, squeezing by Wilkes-Barre for their second consecutive championship. DuBois began day two in third place, only four strokes behind day one leader Penn State Fayette. A second day team total of 325 for DuBois pushed them ahead of the pack as three players finished in the top-10, jumping Wilkes-Barre for the top spot.
Green and Wilson each won a PSUAC Invitational this season, with Green winning the PSUAC White Course Invitational and Wilson taking home the PSUAC Blue Course Invitational crown last month. The frequent tournament playing partners each hit solid drives on the playoff hole, finding the fairway. Wilson had to play a low second shot into the green to avoid the large tree that protects the right portion of the 18th green, and his ball scurried into the rough off the back right of the green. Meanwhile, the lefty Green hit a high draw and used a backstop above the hole to put his second shot within 20-feet for eagle. After Wilson's downhill chip went 6-feet past the hole, Green lagged his eagle putt to within inches and tapped in for birdie. Wilson had a chance to extend the playoff to a second hole, but his birdie putt slid by the right edge of the hole, giving Green the win.
DuBois finished ninth in the USCAA standings, while Penn State campuses held six of the seven spots between 9th and 15th.
