Beaver falls to Penn State Brandywine in PSUAC Baseball Playoffs

State College, PA -- After falling to Penn State Greater Allegheny last night in the first round of the PSUAC playoffs, Beaver squared off against Penn State Brandywine this afternoon in their second round game.

Brandywine jumped out to an early one run lead in the bottom of the first inning and then added three additional runs in the bottom of the third inning giving them the lead 4-0. This would eventually be the final score of the game as both teams were then held scoreless in the final four innings of the game.

Despite good hitting by Beaver early in the game they were not able to produce a single run on their 7 hits in the game and left 6 runners on base. Defensively, they comitted just one error, but even their good defesne wasn't enough to keep Brandywine off the board. Statistically, both teams were evenly matched each with 7 hits in the game and Brandywine only left one fewer runner on base than Beaver. The big difference in the game was that Beaver was not able to string their hits together to scores runs.

Leading the offense for Beaver were seniors, Markus Allen (New Castle, PA/Union) and Alex Filippi (Aliquippa, PA/Center) who both went 2 for 3 at the plate.

On the mound to start the game this afternoon was senior, Vincent Beatty (Rochester, PA/Rochester) who threw 2.1 innings giving up 3 hits and 4 runs while striking out 4 of the 13 batters faced. In relief, was freshman, Matt Sweikowski (Zelienople, PA/Seneca Valley) who tossed 3.2 innings giving up just 4 hits and 0 runs in his 14 batters faced. The loss goes to Vinny Beatty who finishes his senior season with a record of 4-1 on the mound.

Beaver finishes the season with an overall record of 13-16 while going 11-9 in the PSUAC. Beaver graduates nine seniors, but they have a lot of young talent and they will look to develop those players in the off season and will look to return to the playoffs again in the 2014 season.
