Baseball: Buterbaugh Hits Walk-Off RBI Single to Lead Wildcats Over No. 3 PSU Brandywine

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Sophomore Zachary Buterbaugh (Conestoga) hit a walk-off RBI single to lead the Pennsylvania College of Technology baseball team to a 3-2 win over No. 3 Penn State Brandywine in the first round of the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) championships Thursday. With two outs in the top of the eighth, Buterbaugh hit his second single of the day up the middle to score freshman Rantz Mahaffey (Linden) from third. Junior Joshua Longsderff (Columbia) records the win pitching all eight innings with six strikeouts.

After a scoreless first, sophomore Craig Watson (McEwensville) put Penn College (20-13, 17-2 PSUAC) on the board in the bottom of the second with a bases loaded single to score two. The team threatened again in the fourth with bases loaded and one out, but the Lions defense pulled out a double play to end the threat.

Watson finished the game 1 for 2 with two walks.

Brandywine cut the lead in half in the fifth with the first two batters singling. A sac bunt and sacrifice fly followed to make it 2-1.

With two outs in the seventh, Longsderff allowed a single scoring the tying run. The Wildcats could not answer in the bottom sending it into extra innings.

For the team, Penn College totaled eight hits to Brandywine's nine. Mahaffey was 2 for 4 with a run.

The Wildcats will face the winner of No.1 Penn State Greater Allegheny and No. 4 Penn State Beaver at 3 p.m. on Friday, Apr. 26.
