Beaver wins one game of their double header with Mont Alto

Mont Alto, PA -- In game one of the double header this afternoon, it looked to be a close match-up between Beaver and Mont Alto as both teams scored just one run a piece through the first three innings. In the fourth inning, Beaver took control and never looked back. With Alex Filippi (Aliquippa, PA/Center) and Jim Musgrave (Economy, PA/Ambridge) both on base with singles, Tom Lewis (Aliquippa, PA/Hopewell) tripled to score both runners and give Beaver a 3-1 lead. The hits continued in the fifth inning as Mike Karas (Imperial, PA/West Allegheny) was walked and then advanced to third on a Markus Allen (New Castle, PA/Union) double. As both advanced on a wild pitch which scored a run, Allen then scored on a sacrifice by Filippi, increasing Beaver's lead to 5-1. After a quiet sixth inning, Beaver added two more runs in the top of the seventh to make the score 7-1 which would be the final score of the game as Mont Alto was unable to come back from the six run defecit in their last at bat.

Lead the Lions offensively were Tom Lewis and Alex Filippi who both went 2 for 3 in the game.

On the mound for Beaver was senior, Vincent Beatty who threw a complete game striking out 4 and only giving up 5 hits.

In the second game of the afternoon, Beaver jumped out to an early two run lead after the first four innings coming off of hits by Jim Musgrave, Markus Allen and Alex Filippi. But Mont Alto quickly tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. In the top of the sixth, Beaver's Bill Harrington (Monaca, PA/Central Valley) hit a lead off triple and then scored on an error by Mont Alto, but the one run lead was not enough as Mont Alto scored two runs in the bottom of the inning and then held on to get the win by a score of 4-3.

Leading the team offensively were Markus Allen and Jim Musgrave who both went 2 for 4 in the game.

Senior, Cory Wagner (Monaca, PA/Center) was on the mound for the Lions throwing six innings striking out three and only giving up six hits.

Beaver will return to action on Thursday as they go back on the road to face PSUAC rival Greater Allegheny in a 12:00 p.m. start at Pullman Park.
