Beaver drops two to Penn College

Monaca, PA -- Beaver faced conference foe Penn College this afternoon in a double header. In the first game, Penn came out scoring quickly earning two runs in the top of the first. The Lions then answered with two runs of their own coming off of hits by Markus Allen (New Caslte, PA/Union), Tom Lewis (Aliquippa, PA/Hopewell) and Grant Scott (Sewickley, PA/Ann Arbor Pioneer). The game remained close through the next three innings with Penn College scoring runs in both the third and fourth innings. Beaver bats came alive again in the bottom of the sixth when Allen and Scott again both had singles and Lewis got on base on a fielder's choice, but sacrificed Scott at second on the play. With runners on the corners, Jim Musgrave (Economy, PA/Ambridge) doubled to score both runners and tie the game at four. The offense for Penn College scored a late two runs in the seventh inning, and Beaver wasn't able to overcome the deficit and lost the first game by a final score of 6-4.

Leading the offense for Beaver was Allen who went 2-4, Scott who went 2-3, and Lewis who also went 2-3.

On the mound for the Lions was junior Tyler Schuster (Beaver Falls, PA/Beaver Falls) who pitched all seven innings striking out 7, walking 3, and giving up 8 hits.

In the second game of the afternoon, Beaver got off to a slow start giving up 4 runs in the first three innings. In the bottom of the third the Lions finaly got on the board with the first two batters, Bill Harrington(Monaca, PA/Central Valley) and Alex Filippi (Aliquippa, PA/Center) getting walked and advancing to score one run on a single by Markus Allen. With runners on the corners, the pitcher for Penn continued to struggle and on a wild pitch Filippi was able to score and Allen advanced to second. Scott then came to the plate and hit a double to score Allen and leave the score at the end of the inning 4-3 in favor of Penn. Throughout the rest of the game Penn kept their edge and Beaver was only able to add one more run before Penn closed the game by a final score of 7-4.

Leading the Lions on offense was again Markus Allen who went 2-4. And on the mound in this match-up was Cory Wagner (Monaca, PA/Center) who threw 5.1 innings giving up 12 hits and all 7 runs. In relief was Ryan Hudacsek (Economy, PA/Ambridge) who threw 1.2 innings facing a total of 6 batters.

Beaver returns to action on Wednesday, April 10th at 2 p.m. when they are scheduled to take on Penn State Fayette at home.
