Baseball: Wildcats Swept by Southern Virginia in Season Opener
BUENA VISTA, Va. - The Pennsylvania College of Technology baseball team lost two tight games to Southern Virginia University Saturday in its season-opening doubleheader. In the opener, the Wildcats lost in extra innings 4-3 and followed it up losing 6-5 in the second game.
In game one, Penn College (0-2) gave sophomore starter Zachary Yetter (Thompsontown) an early cushion scoring two runs in the first when sophomore Zachary Weil (Kutztown) notched an RBI off a sacrifice bunt. A throwing error from Southern Virginia allowed another run to score.
Southern Virginia's Josh Linn put his team back in it with an RBI single in the second and a solo shot in the fourth. Yetter came out of the game after the inning closing out his book with two hits, two runs and three strikeouts.
Sophomore Craig Watson (McEwensville) scored on a throwing error in the fifth putting the Wildcats back on top but Tyler Clark hit an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to tie it up again.
Staying tied through the rest of regulation, CJ Andrews gave Southern Virginia the win in the eighth with an RBI sacrifice fly. Freshman Luke Zamiskie (Latrobe) recorded the loss in relief going 3.2 innings with five hits and two runs. He recorded three strikeouts.
Penn College recorded seven hits with sophomore Zachary Buterbaugh (Conestoga) going 2-4 with a run and stolen base.
In game two, the Wildcats again struck early with three runs in the second. After an RBI single from freshman Kyle Eck (South Williamsport), freshman James Simasek (Landenberg) hit a double for two RBI. He finished the game 2-2 with a run in addition to the RBI.
Junior Josh Longsderff (Columbia) got the start pitching the first four innings and allowing only two hits with one run and one strikeout.
After sophomore Travis Hendershot (Muncy) notched an RBI in the third for Penn College, Southern Virginia got a run in both the third,fifth and sixth making it a 4-3 game. Watson came in relief in the fifth to pitch the next two innings with three hits, two runs and two strikeouts.
Junior Cody Buterbaugh (Conestoga) put up the Wildcats' final run in the sixth with an RBI double. He finished the game 2-4 with an RBI and run.
Zachary Buterbaugh came to the mound to close out the game with the two-run cushion but allowed five hits and three runs for Southern Virginia to steal the win away. The Wildcats totaled seven hits in the game.
Next up, Penn College travels to Myrtle Beach, S.C. for its spring break tournament. The team will take on County College of Morris in its first game on Monday, Mar. 11 at 1 p.m.
