Wildcats Earn Come-From-Behind Win over Wilkes
WILKES BARRE, Pa. –Senior Jared Johnson (Wyalusing) was 2-4 with two RBI to help lead the Pennsylvania College of Technology baseball team to a 7-6 victory of Wilkes University Tuesday. The win improves the Wildcats to 6-4 overall. Sophomore Brian Santangelo (Middletown, Conn.) records the win going 4.1 innings striking out eight and allowing only one hit.
Tied at 6 in the top of the ninth, sophomore Cody Buterbaugh (Conestoga) singled to right. He advanced to third on a stolen base and error by the catcher. Freshman Zachary Buterbaugh (Conestoga) doubled for the RBI and lead. Zachary Buterbaugh came closed out the game for the win and notched a save.
At the start of the game, the Wildcats went up 1-0 in the top of the first off a sacrifice fly from Johnson. Senior Thomas Hughes (Easton) scored the run after having led off with a double. Wilkes' (5-9) Tay Sidler hit a three-run shot to center to give his team the lead in the bottom of the inning.
After Wilkes put up another run in the second, Penn College came back in the third with a run. Senior Garrett Hornung (Emporium) led off with a double and again Johnson notched the RBI, this time with a single to center field, making it a 4-2 game.
Down 6-2 in the fourth, senior Skylar Gingrich (Lititz) singled to score two and cut the lead. The next inning, Santangelo came in relief for starter, freshman Jacob Wrenn (Gransville, Mass.). Wrenn finished the game with eight hits, six runs and two strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work.
Santangelo shut down the Colonels' offense over the next four innings. The Wildcats tied it up in the seventh when freshman Travis Hendershot (Muncy) tripled to score Johnson who led off with single. Cody Buterbaugh followed with a single, scoring Hendershot.
Hendershot finished the game 3-5 while Cody Buterbaugh was 2-5.
As a team, the Wildcats totaled 14 hits, including five that were extra bases.
Penn College next hosts Baptist Bible College on Saturday, Mar. 24 for a noon doubleheader.
