Brandywine, Stockton Split One-Run Games

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine walked off with a 2-1 victory in game one, but Stockton claimed a 3-2, extra-inning triumph in game two as the teams split a non-conference softball doubleheader on Thursday afternoon.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 2, Stockton 1

Rebecca Sorrentino (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) posted the game-winning run batted in, lifting a sacrifice fly to center field to score Payton Landis (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Alexandra Szpindor (Pottstown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) got the final inning started with a double and came around to score the tying run on a Landis' two-base hit. After a flyout, Haley Grossi's (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) infield single sent Landis to third, allowing her to score on Sorrentino's sacrifice fly.

Szpindor went all seven innings in the circle to earn her first win of the season. She struck out two and limited the Ospreys to one earned run on five hits. Samantha McErlane held Brandywine without a run for six innings before allowing two scores on three hits in the seventh and received the loss.

Nikki Velez (Gloucester, N.J./Gloucester City) posted a pair of infield singles and reached base three times to pace the offense.

Game Two: Stockton 3, Penn State Brandywine 2

Brandywine held a pair of one-run leads, but Stockton rallied to win in eight innings, scoring a run on a groundout, after Vanessa Tacini had stolen third base to start the inning.

The Lions loaded the bases with two outs during the bottom of the frame, but Marissa Semararo produced a strikeout to end the threat.

Brandywine took its one-run leads via a pair of RBI singles from Fiona Warren (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley). Both of her base hits came with two outs, with one coming in the first inning to score Szpindor, and the next two innings later, allowing pinch-runner Arden Rabiger (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) to cross home.

Warren recorded three of Brandywine's six hits in the night cap and reached base safely four times overall after working a walk in the eighth inning.

Semararo claimed the win in the circle for the Ospreys, while Sorrentino worked all eight innings for Brandywine, striking out one and yielding three runs (two earned) on six hits.

Brandywine (2-1) will head to Florida for The Spring Games beginning Saturday with matchups against Sage (4:00 pm) and Washington & Jefferson (6:15).
