Vero Beach, FL---- Penn State Beaver opened the 2013 season by playing Division 2 University of Mary from North Dakota at Vero Beach Sports Complex in sunny Vero Beach, Florida. Mary took both games of the doubleheader, winning by scores of 6-3 and 2-0.
Beaver started senior Cory Wagner (Monaca, Center) in game one and Wagner went 5 and 2/3 innings and gave up 6 earned runs on 9 hits while walking 5 and striking out 3. The Lions trailed 2-0 after 5 when Mary picked up four in their half of the 6th to take a 6-0 lead. The Lions scored 3 in the final inning, led by a 2 RBI triple from Markus Allen (New Castle, Union) as Allen would later score on an error to give Beaver their 3rd run of the contest. Grant Scott (Ann Arbor Pioneer, Sewickley) added another triple in the game and freshman Mike Ross (Neshannock, New Castle) added two hits including a double and also scored a run for the Lions. Beaver finished the game with 7 hits total.
Tyler Schuster (Beaver Falls, Beaver Falls) started game two and pitched very well in his first start of the season as he threw all 7 innings, giving up 1 earned run on 4 hits while striking out 4 and only issuing one walk. It was a rough game for the Beaver offense, however, as they were held hitless in their second game of the day.
Beaver will be back in action tomorrow when they play Inside Pitch Acadamy at 9am and play again at 1pm against Gatineau Baseball Club.
