MEDIA, Pa. -- The Penn State Brandywine volleyball team got Penn State University Athletic Conference play started with a victory as the Lions topped Penn State Hazleton 3-1 (25-19, 18-25, 25-15, 25-23) on Tuesday night.

Sydney Terrell (Walkersville, Md./St. John's Catholic Prep) paced the Brandywine offense with 12 kills and three aces, along with 14 digs, while Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) tallied eight kills. Anna Ramirez (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) notched six kills and a team-high five aces.

Laura Jezyk (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) handed out 18 assists and produced nine digs, while Sophie Scrivo (Chester, Conn./Valley Regional) totaled 13 assists and four kills.

Defensively, Suzie Alvarenga (Fullerton, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) collected a match-high 29 digs and Lexie Berry (Brookhaven, Pa./Daegu) topped the team with four blocks. Ramirez chipped in with 16 digs and Sydney Stevens (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. DuPont) paired 14 digs with three aces.

Brandywine trailed the first set 12-9, but ripped off 11-straight points, aided by five Hazleton errors and kills from four different players. The Lions allowed Hazleton to get within 22-18, but a kill from Terrell and two Hazleton errors handed the first set to Brandywine.

After Hazleton evened the match with a second-set triumph, Brandywine took control of the third frame early, using four Hazleton errors and an ace from Stevens to score five-straight points for a 10-4 edge. Consecutive kills from Scrivo and Terrell extended the margin to 16-8 and Ramirez later capped a 6-2 spurt with an ace to give the set to Brandywine, 25-15.

Hazleton held a 22-15 edge during the fourth set; however, Brandywine came storming back. Following a timeout, a Hazleton error, an ace from Stevens and kill from Alvarenga brought the count to 22-18. Hazleton got one point back, but Brandwine answered with the final seven points to rally for the victory. Ramirez delivered a kill and added three aces before Scrivo and Terrell finished the set off with kills.

Brandywine (1-1, 1-0 PSUAC) continues a busy week Wednesday at Neumann beginning at 7:00 PM.
