York Sends Brandywine To First Conference Loss

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine won the first set, but Penn State York claimed the next three and dealt the Lions their first PSUAC volleyball loss by a 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-14, 25-19) count on Wednesday night.

Brandywine led wire-to-wire during the first set, opening up a lead as large as 12-5 following consecutive kills from Lexie Berry (Brookhaven, Pa./Daegu) and Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro). The visitors chipped away at the Brandywine lead, closing within one, but a service error sent the first set to the Lions.

Neither team led by more than two points until midway through the second period when York produced five-straight points to lead 17-11. Brandywine used a 5-1 spurt, aided by four York miscues and a kill from Berry, to climb within 21-19, but York notched four of the final five points to even the match.

York led for the entirety of the third set, pulling away late, as the visitors took the frame 25-14 and built a 2-1 lead.

The visitors led the final stanza 18-14 before a kill by Sydney Terrell (Walkersville, Md./St. John's Catholic Prep), an ace from Anna Ramirez (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East), and a York error brought Brandywine within one point; however, York answered with the next five points and Brandywine could not trim the margin to less than five the rest of the way.

Ramirez recorded 10 kills, while Floyd and Berry tallied seven each. Laura Jezyk (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) tallied 17 assists and Sophie Scrivo (Chester, Conn./Valley Regional) added 10 helpers.

Defensively, five Lions reached double figures in digs, paced by Suzie Alvarenga's (Fullerton, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) 25. Terrell notched 19, while Sydney Stevens (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. DuPont) produced 18. Ramirez and Jezyk both recorded 11 digs and Berry topped the team with a pair of blocks.

Brandywine (8-5, 6-1 PSUAC) looks to bounce back Monday night when the Lions visit Penn State Hazleton at 7:00 PM.
