Seniors Step Up Big on Senior Night

On a night when Williamson honored its four senior soccer players and their families, it only seemed appropriate that all four seniors played a big part in Williamson's 4-2 victory over Penn State Mont Alto. Field players Brandon Cairy, Zachary Bosak, Nathan Meyers and goalie Michael Hegarty all contributed in a big way to move Williamson to 8-6-1 on the year and guarantee the Mechanics their first winning season since 2016.

The game was a 'welcome back' event for Cairy, as he missed the last five games with an injury.  Williamson fell into a slump in his absence, but he immediately made his presence felt upon his return. He scored at the 13:28 mark of the first half off a blast from 31-yards away to put Williamson up 1-0. Dan Maroney put Williamson up 2-0 at the 10:55 mark, off an assist from Dylan Beaver to put Williamson up 2-0 at the break.

It was then senior Nathan Meyers turn to get into the act.  Normally known for his play in goal, Meyers scored his first collegiate goal at the 33:50 mark of the second half, off an assist from Cairy, to put Williamson up 3-0.

Anyone who has seen the games between these two teams in the past knew that Penn State Mont Alto was not going down without a fight.  A well-coached team, they fought hard and their hard work paid off as they eventually got on the board at the 15:19 mark off a nice goal by Thomas Oberholzer to make it 3-1.

The Lions then threw a scare into the Mechanics when at the 3:00 mark, Oberholzer scored off on a rebound off a penalty kick save by Michael Hegarty, to make it 3-2.  The Lions then put on constant pressure on Williamson's defense to try to tie things up.  With 20 seconds left though, Mechanic fans could take a huge sigh of relief, as senior Zachary Bosak scored his team leading 16th goal of the year, good for 5th in the nation, to put the game out of reach at 4-2.

Fellow senior Michael Hegarty played a big game in net for the Mechanics, as he made six saves, several of which came at crucial moments, to pick up the win in his final home game.

"I'm excited for our seniors, and for our entire team," shared Williamson head coach Peter Glowa. "These guys have worked so hard to get to this point.  Obviously when Brandon and Gio went down, things didn't turn out the way we had hoped, but these guys deserve a ton of credit.  I'm proud of what they have achieved this year and over their three years at Williamson."

The win gives Williamson its firs winning season since 2016.  The team will close out their 2023 campaign at Manor College on Thursday in a 3:00 P.M. start.  Manor defeated Williamson 4-0 on October 10.

Prior to the game Williamson honored the above mentioned four seniors and their family members.  Those honored included:
