Women's Basketball Loses Quarterfinal Matchup to Penn State Lehigh Valley

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - #4 seed Penn State Schuylkill Women's Basketball fell to #1 seed Penn State Lehigh Valley in the opening round of the PSUAC Playoffs on Monday.

With Lehigh Valley holding a one-point lead with 5:40 remaining in the opening quarter, they embarked on an 11-2 run to extend their lead to double digits with just over three minutes to play in the first. Schuylkill quickly narrowed their deficit as consecutive three-pointers by Ava Novak (Numidia, PA / Southern Columbia High School) before the end of the period brought the score to 21-15 in favor of Lehigh Valley heading into the second.

Following a basket by Lehigh Valley to start the second quarter, Norma Thornhill (Washington D.C. / Eleanor Roosevelt High School) found Monet Edwards (Philadelphia, PA / Swenson Arts and Technology High School) in the corner for a three-pointer, bringing Schuylkill within five points. A steal by Thornhill on the very next possession ultimately led to a made jump shot by Serena Jones (Tamaqua, PA / Tamaqua High School), making it a one-possession contest early in the quarter. A layup by Allison Crockett (Liverpool, PA / Greenwood High School) narrowed Schuylkill's deficit to 23-22 with 7:32 remaining.

Lehigh Valley then went on a 10-0 run to push their lead back to double digits with 4:45 left in the quarter. Schuylkill then caught fire, scoring on four consecutive offensive possessions. Schuylkill ended the period on a 16-9 run, bringing them within four points heading into halftime.

Schuylkill continued to fight as a putback by Jones to begin the half brought their deficit to 42-40. A mid-quarter run by Lehigh Valley saw them extend their lead to double digits, a margin that they were able to hold onto for the remainder of the contest.

Novak led Schuylkill in scoring 11 points off the bench. Crockett scored 9 points. Edwards and Jasmine Wright (Sicklerville, NJ / Winslow Township High School) scored 8 points each while Wright grabbed 6 boards.
