MEDIA, Pa. – Anaiyah Allen's (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner) layup with three seconds to play in regulation broke a 58-58 tie and sent the Penn State Brandywine women's basketball team to a 60-58 victory over Penn State Shenango on Friday night.
Athena Brombacher (Vacaville, Calif./Will C. Wood) found Allen slipping to the basket and Allen sank the basket as Brandywine held off a late charge from the visitors. Shenango had one final possession to tie or take the lead, but Dairayonna Stewart-Harold (New Castle, Del./William Penn) stole the inbound pass to secure the victory.
Allen finished the night with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting, while Brombacher added 15 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) chipped in 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
Brandywine, which held a slim, 11-10 edge after one quarter, broke the game open early in the second by scoring eight-straight points. Floyd and Allen both contributed three points, while Brombacher capped the spurt with a layup at the 6:25 mark. Allen's three-pointer with 5:43 to go in the half extended the Lions' lead to 26-15 before Shenango closed within 32-24 at the break.
Brandywine doubled its advantage by the mid-point of the third period. A pair of Brombacher free throws made the count 46-29 with 4:17 on the clock; however, Brandywine went without a point for the next six minutes and Shenango mounted a rally.
The visitors cut their deficit to 11 after three quarters and climbed within four less than two minutes into the final stanza. Stewart-Harold ended the drought with a jumper and Allen pushed the Lions' lead back to eight points at the 5:17 mark; however, Shenango answered by scoring eight-straight points to knot the count at 54-54.
Brombacher's putback put Brandywine on top 58-56 with 26 seconds to play, but Shenango netted two free throws during its next possession, setting up Allen's game winner.
Brandywine shot 31 percent from the field and forced 24 Shenango turnovers. The Lions limited Shenango to 3-of-16 shooting from beyond the arc.
Brandywine (4-7, 4-3 PSUAC) will host Penn State New Kensington Saturday at noon.
