New Brighton, Pa
Evan Pinchot - The Penn State Beaver baseball team took on the men of Penn State New Kensington on Wednesday night, coming away with their first conference victory of the season in what could be described as a shootout of a game.
Coming into this game 0-7 on the year in conference play, Beaver seemed to have a chip on their should from the very first inning. Both team started this game out hot, as New Kensington would push across 4 runs in the top of the first inning, while Beaver would be quick to answer back with 2 runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. After a rocky start in the first inning, it would be Beaver's starter, Freshman Dom Petrella (Beaver, Pa Beaver High School), who would settle in to allow only 1 run over the next three innings. With Petrella settled in on the mound, Beaver's bat would stay hot throuhgout the rest of the game, as they would score at least one run in every inning but the fourth, thanks to the team's 14 combined hits. With outstanding performances at the plate by Senior Scott Hughes (Aliquippa, Pa Central Valley High School), who went 2-4 with 3 RBIs, and Senior Stefan Romaniuk (Alpha, Nj / Notre Dame), who was an impressive 3-4 with a home run and 2 RBIs, Beaver's offense was the story in this game, as they would eventually out score New Kensington in this one to win by a final score of 12-10.
With their win today, Beaver was able to break their 7 game losing streak and improve their record to 3-7 overall and 1-7 in conference play. With outstanding performances throughout their lineup today, Beaver' star in this game was Senior Stefan Romaniuk with his 2 run home run in the second inning.
Beaver will look to carry this momentum into their next matchup on the road against Penn State Du Bois on Friday, April 9, in what is scheduled as a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to start at 6 pm with game two scheduled for an 8 pm start.
