Brandywine Tops Bryn Athyn In Four Sets

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine bounced back from a loss 24 hours earlier by topping Bryn Athyn College 3-1 (25-23, 27-29, 25-14, 25-23) in non-conference volleyball action Thursday night.

Playing its third match in as many nights, Brandywine overcame a 21-18 deficit during the first set by scoring seven of the final nine points, claiming the frame 25-23. Kills from three different players and aces by Sydney Stevens (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. DuPont) and Suzie Alvarenga (Fullerton, Calif./Notre Dame Academy) aided the comeback.

Brandywine held set point three times during the second set, but committed a service error each time, allowing Bryn Athyn to even the match with a 29-27 set victory.

A 7-1 run, aided by four Bryn Athyn errors and two kills from Anna Ramirez (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) pushed Brandywine in front 16-9 during the third stanza. The visitors netted the next four points to get within three; however, the Lions answered with kills from Lexie Berry (Brookhaven, Pa./Daegu) and Sophie Scrivo (Chester, Conn./Valley Regional), along with a pair of aces from Stevens, to push the margin to 10. Ramirez and Laura Jezyk (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) set down consecutive kills to help the Lions claim the set.

BAC led 20-17 during the fourth frame before Ramirez and Jezyk combined for four-straight kills during a quick, 5-0 spurt, handing the Lions a 22-20 edge. Bryn Athyn knotted the count at 22-22, but three BAC errors during the final four points handed the set and match to Brandywine.

Ramirez led the Lions with 11 kills and added 19 digs and three aces, while Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) collected 10 kills and 10 digs. Berry notched eight kills and Stevens chipped in with a team-high five aces. Stevens and Alvarenga tied for the team lead with 22 digs. Jezyk registered 19 digs, while Terrell posted 10. Scrivo and Berry both tallied two blocks.
