Brandywine Rolls In Home Opener

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine forced 37 turnovers and cruised to a 70-41 victory over Penn State Scranton during its women's basketball home opener on Tuesday night.

Brandywine scored on its first five possessions of the night and opened up a 12-5 lead less than three minutes into the game. Scranton closed within three points on two occasions before Raelyn Loper's (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) layup with eight seconds left brought the count to 21-14 after 10 minutes.

The Lions' defense collected 12 Scranton turnovers during the second period and began to pull away. Loper capped an 11-4 spurt with a steal and lay in as Brandywine opened up a 37-20 edge and led by 15 points at the half.

Five players contributed baskets during a 13-0 run to open the half that helped the Lions put the game away. Dairayonna Stewart-Harold (New Castle, Del./William Penn) sank a layup midway through the period to push the lead to 52-24 and Brandywine would lead by as many as 32 points before settling for the 29-point victory. 

Athena Brombacher (Vacaville, Calif./Will C. Wood) and Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) both recorded double-doubles to lead the Lions. Floyd paired 18 points with 11 rebounds, while Brombacher posted 12 points and 10 boards. 

Anaiyah Allen (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner) added 10 points, eight rebounds and seven steals. Stewart-Harold chipped in nine points, while Loper and Sierra Diawara (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) both tallied eight points.

Brandywine held a 54-48 edge on the boards, while shooting 39 percent and limiting Scranton to 24 percent shooting.

Brandywine (2-3, 2-1 PSUAC) hosts Penn State Greater Allegheny Friday night at 6:00 PM.
