Brandywine Opens Season With 8-0 Victory

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine broke the game open with a five-run second inning and needed just five innings to defeat Swarthmore College 8-0 during the Lions' 2020 softball season opener Tuesday afternoon. Game two was halted after three innings by darkness.

Cara Fabiano (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) spun a two-hit shutout, the second of her career, to earn the victory for Brandywine. Fabiano yielded just a second-inning single and third-inning double before setting down the final seven batters she faced. She struck out a pair of Garnet over 5.0 innings.

At the plate, Rachel Cherubini (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) delivered a pair of hits and drove in four runs, while Payton Landis (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) went 3-for-3 with two doubles in her college debut. Fiona Warren (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) accounted for the Lions' sixth hit and Alexia Galli (Glenolden, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) scored twice, stole a base and drove in a run.

Landis led off the second inning with her first hit, a single, and came around to score on Warren's double to open the scoring. Three batters later, Galli laid down a suicide squeeze to plate Warren. After Brandywine loaded the bases with two outs, Cherubini delivered the big hit of the inning, a bases-clearing triple, to up the lead to 5-0.

Brandywine added to its edge in the fourth when Landis doubled in Cherubini before tallying two runs in the fifth to end the game by run rule. Haley Grossi (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run, while Cherubini lifted a single to right field, scoring Galli with the final tally.

The teams played three innings of game two. Rebecca Sorrentino (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) struck out two and allowed just two hits in her college debut for the Lions, while Lucy Decker set down all nine Brandywine hitters she faced before the game was called off by darkness.

Brandywine is back at Maple Zone Thursday to face Stockton University beginning at 2:00 pm.
