Brandywine Falls In Conference Opener

MONACA, Pa. – Penn State Beaver pulled away during the second half, handing the Penn State Brandywine women's basketball team an 81-55 setback during the Penn State University Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Friday night.

Brandywine faced a three-point deficit after one quarter, but Beaver knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to begin the second period, extending the lead to nine points. The hosts grew their edge as large as 12 points with 1:38 to go before halftime; however, Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) scored the final six points of the half, all from the free throw line, to get the Lions within 42-36 at intermission.

Kaitlyn Johnson (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) canned a jumper and added two free throws 90 seconds later to trim the Lions' deficit to two early in the third quarter; however, Beaver would not allow Brandywine to get closer.

Beaver used an 11-0 run during the next three minutes to build a 15-point edge and outscored Brandywine 33-11 overall during the game's final 16 minutes to pull away.

Floyd sank all 10 of her free throws and paced the Lions with 21 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Sierra Diawara (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) tallied 13 points and matched Floyd for the team lead in rebounds, while Johnson notched nine points.

Brandywine (0-3, 0-1 PSUAC) plays for the second-straight day Saturday afternoon at Penn State Fayette (1:00 PM).
