Brandywine Tops DuBois 3-0; Advances To Fifth-Straight Title Game

DUBOIS, Pa. – Second-seeded Penn State Brandywine will play for its fifth consecutive Penn State University Athletic Conference softball championship after winning its 15-straight PSUAC Tournament game by blanking Penn State DuBois 3-0 on Sunday night.

The Lions (22-17) will face either DuBois or Penn State Hazleton at 1:00 pm Monday at Heindl Memorial Field in DuBois for the championship. Brandywine, already the athletic department's first-ever team to win four-straight championships in any sport, can become the first PSUAC squad to win five consecutive softball titles since Hazleton from 1998-2002.

Alexandra Szpindor (Pottstown, Pa./Pope John Paul II) twirled her first-career complete game shutout, yielding just four hits. She struck out four batters, upping her win total to six on the season.

DuBois put runners on second and third with two outs in the first, but Szpindor got a fly out to right field to end the threat. That would be the final time a DuBois baserunner advanced past first base all night as Szpindor retired 19 of the final 22 batters she faced.

Arianna Segich (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) provided all the offense the Lions would need. She dropped down a bunt single that scored Haley Grossi (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick) with the game's first run and after stealing third base, came around to score on a DuBois throwing error in the third inning.

Segich recorded her second bunt single of the night in the sixth inning. She stole second and third before speeding home on Szpindor's popup to second base.

Alyssa Sullivan (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) also tallied a pair of hits for Brandywine, which produced five knocks overall.
