Alvernia Knocks Off Brandywine In Season Opener

READING, Pa. – The Penn State Brandywine women's basketball team dropped its 2023-24 season opener at Alvernia, falling by a score of 89-54 on Wednesday evening.

Anaiyah Allen (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner) paced the Lions by recording the fourth 20-point performance of her career, pouring in 21 points. Allen knocked down all five of her three-point attempts and 8-of-12 shots overall.

Sierra Diawara (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) added a trio of triples, scoring 15 points, while Athena Brombacher (Vacaville, Calif./Will C. Wood) and Raelyn Loper (West Chester, Pa./Rustin) both netted six points in their respective collegiate debuts.

Allen canned three triples during the first quarter, helping Brandywine battle back from eight points down to get within 21-18 after 10 minutes.

The Golden Wolves pulled away during the second period, using a 15-2 spurt to build a 20-point edge. A pair of Alvernia free throws extended the margin to 50-26 at the break and the Golden Wolves' lead never dipped below 20 points during the final 20 minutes.

Brombacher was the Lions' leading rebounder with seven boards, while Allen pulled in six rebounds.

Alvernia shot 43 percent from the field and committed just 10 turnovers, while the Lions knocked down 31 percent of their shots from the field.

Brandywine (0-1) will be back on the road Monday night at Ursinus at 7:30 PM.
