Brandywine Falls Short In PSUAC Quarterfinals

YORK, Pa. -- Third-seeded Penn State Brandywine saw its season come to a close following a 60-52 loss to second-seeded Penn State York in the quarterfinal round of the Penn State University Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament on Monday night.

Athena Brombacher (Vacaville, Calif./Will C. Wood) staked Brandywine to a 2-0 lead with a jumper at the 8:27 mark of the first quarter, but the Lions were limited to just two points for the remainder of the period and trailed 13-4 through 10 minutes.

After York pushed the margin to 10 points early in the second, Brombacher knocked down a pair of free throws and Dairayonna Stewart-Harold (New Castle, Del./William Penn) and Kiara Koger (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) followed with back-to-back baskets, closing the gap to 18-14. The hosts used a 9-2 spurt over the next 2:25 to extend the margin back to double figures and led 30-20 at intermission.

York maintained its double-figure advantage for the duration of the third quarter and ballooned the margin as large as 17 points with 6:45 to go before Brandywine made a final push.

Brombacher canned a jumper and added a free throw, while Anaiyah Allen (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner) knocked down a triple to get Brandywine within 13. After a pair of York free throws, Amanda Floyd (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) canned a three-pointer and Allen added a second triple with 62 seconds to play, making the count 58-49.

Brandywine got as close as six points down with 30 seconds to go when Koger connected on a jumper and a free throw, but York answered with two free throws and the Lions came up empty offensively during their final two possessions.

Brombacher paced Brandywine with 18 points and a career-best 16 rebounds, including eight offensive boards. Allen added 11 points and six rebounds.

Floyd grabbed 12 boards and scored the final nine points of her 110-game collegiate career. She finished her four seasons at Brandywine ranked second on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,753 points after averaging nearly 16 points per game. Floyd also also ranked among the Lions' all-time leaders with 762 rebounds, 286 steals and 219 three-pointers.

Brandywine finished its 18th season under Head Coach Larry Johnson with a record of 15-11 after making its 19th consecutive trip to the postseason.
