Women's Basketball Rallies Late, Defeats Hazleton 53-51

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Penn State Schuylkill Women's Basketball came from behind in the fourth quarter to defeat PSUAC opponent Penn State Hazleton at the Lebanon Valley College Rinso Marquette Tournament on Sunday.

During the initial period marked by back-and-forth exchanges, Schuylkill predominantly held control. Kassidy Ingram's (Abington, PA / Trinity High School) basket contributed to a 7-2 run, granting Schuylkill a lead. Hazleton countered, securing a one-point advantage by the end of the period with a late basket with 1:21 to go.

The second period witnessed a lack of significant separation, featuring six lead changes and no lead exceeding four points. Hazleton took the initiative after halftime, outscoring Schuylkill 18-11 in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, a made 3-point shot by Malak Mowafi (Iselin, NJ / John F Kennedy Memorial High School) initiated a 5-0 stretch for Schuylkill, reducing their deficit to 42-38. Down by six later in the period, Ava Novak (New Media, PA / Southern Columbia High School) made consecutive three-pointers, leveling the score at 48 with 3:12 remaining. Following a Hazleton basket, Mowafi evened the score once again, pulling up from the free-throw line with 2:13 to go in regulation.

Trailing 51-50 with 51 seconds left, Serena Jones (Tamaqua, PA / Tamaqua High School) found Novak in the short corner, hitting two of her game-high 17 points, giving Schuylkill the lead. Schuylkill's defense limited Hazleton's scoring opportunities, leading them to victory. Schuylkill outscored Hazleton 20-9 in the final period.

Novak led Schuylkill, finishing with a 17-point, 13 rebound double-double. Also notching a double-double was Ingram who finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Jones added 10 points and 9 rebounds while Mowafi tallied 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals. Novak received All-Tournament honors for her play throughout the tournament.

Schuylkill (1-3 overall, 0-0 PSUAC) will) celebrate their 2023 PSUAC Championship win during halftime of Men's Basketball's matchup against McDaniel College on Tuesday before traveling to Centenary University on Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m. matchup.
